SONGWRITER TRANSFORMATIONS
SONGWRITER TRANSFORMATIONS
It seems so simple to have a story in mind when writing a song, but it wasn't until working with Saral that I learned a method to fully integrate a narrative into my songwriting. On top of that, Saral is extremely knowledgeable about music as a whole, and he was able to meet me at my level throughout the entire songwriting program. I am no longer intimidated by writing music, and I am so grateful to have tools I will no doubt be using for the rest of my life. Thank you, Saral!

I was intimidated about working with a songwriting coach because I had very little experience writing complete songs, but Saral’s course truly is applicable to any skill level. Over six sessions, Saral broke down the process of building a song around a narrative, providing a tool to map the whole process easily. Something I found interesting is that Saral’s approach to mapping songs is not only applicable for writing a song, but for sharing the vision and details of that song with producers, studio musicians, co-writers, you name it. As an aspiring audio engineer, I could easily envision using Saral’s song mapping process to communicate clearly with potential clients or producers. I also appreciated that, while each session of the course was structured, Saral left some room to veer off into the specific parts of songwriting and creating music that I was interested in. Overall, I’m glad I decided to take the course despite my initial doubts, and I got a lot out of it that I know I’ll continue to use.

While it’s obviously not a new concept to write a song that tells a story, Saral’s technique of mapping the narrative to the song’s elements is the key to giving your compositions contrast and purpose from section to section and song to song. Recently one of my own songs has been transformed through this process, resulting in a composition above and beyond what I was previously capable of producing. Saral’s innovative method truly opened my eyes regarding what my compositions were missing, why they would come to a halt well before completion, and where they were falling apart. My music is never going to be the same again!Â

Years ago I wrote a song with a lot of repetitive verses, and recently I’ve wondered how I could keep it interesting with just me singing and playing piano. I spent the past hour looking at it from the perspective of wanting the accompaniment to better reflect the STORY in the song and pretty quickly came up with a whole new set of variations that make it a lot more fun to play and listen to. Saral's approach immediately helped me improve the song and make it more entertaining!
